Nurse Gina’s Caregiver Checklist

Feeling overwhelmed as a family caregiver? Nurse Gina’s caregiver checklist helps you care for your body, mind, and spirit so you can show up with more ease and compassion.

How to use this guide:
On at least 3 days each week, gently aim to check off 2–3 items from each section. Small, consistent steps toward caring for yourself can create more ease, clarity, and steadiness over time.

✓ The Body: Physical Well‑Being

  • I get enough sleep most nights to function day to day (typically 6–8 hours).
  • I eat regular meals with mostly nourishing foods and stay hydrated.
  • I incorporate gentle movement into my week (walking, stretching, yoga).
  • I keep up with my own health needs, including medications, supplements, and medical appointments.

✓ The Mind: Emotional & Mental Well‑Being

  • I set aside time to rest or do something I truly enjoy.
  • I have a healthy outlet for stress (movement, journaling, prayer, or meditation).
  • I set boundaries when I feel overwhelmed and give myself permission to say “no.”
  • I allow myself to ask for help from my support system when I need it.

✓ The Spirit: Support & Connection

  • I feel connected to someone who understands caregiving.
  • I understand the care plan and next steps and know who to contact with questions (primary care provider, hospice team, care manager, or patient advocate).
  • I feel able to speak up for my loved one and ask questions when something doesn’t feel right.
  • I know where to find trustworthy community or educational resources (caregiver support groups, senior centers, nonprofits, or trusted online sources).

“Caring for yourself is an essential part of caring for the one you love. When you honor your body, mind, and spirit, you can show up with more clarity, strength, and compassion.”
